Anyone who knows me, knows I am completely useless when it comes to Make Up. Like… shockingly bad. That’s why when my lovely friend Sophie told me about Birchbox (when we should have been doing an assignment mind) I knew I just had to have it!!
So what is Birchbox?
Birchbox is a monthly subscription box, in which you pay £10 a month, plus £2.99 postage. In each box you get 5 samples of different beauty, skin and haircare products, some are sample sizes and some are full size, giving you a chance to try out different products you may have heard of and wanted to use, or never heard of before.
When you sign up, you are given the chance to input your beauty profile, giving your skin type and shade, hair type and other things such as your hair and eye colour. That way, the products you receive can be tailored to you.
Alongside this, in each box, you are given a choice for one of your products out of two, and another product you are given a sneak peak. I’m not sure whether the sneak peak is every month but I know you get to choose one product each month. Also, if you review each of the products, you get a free gift in your next box… exciting much!!!
For £10 a month, you can’t really go wrong. The contents of the box usually adds up to more than this so you definitely get your moneys worth, and it’s like a little present to yourself each month!!!! What more could you ask for!!
When the box arrived I was at work so my Nanna, who lives next door, collected it from the mail man. I had ordered some things off Pretty Little Thing on next day delivery so I knew I was coming home to a parcel, but obviously when I went round to collect it after work, I was far more excited to see my first Birchbox waiting for me also! It came a lot sooner than I was expecting.
Firstly, I thought the box was a lot smaller than I was expecting but still a good size. I don’t really know what I was expecting, with it being my first box but I’ll know what to expect in the future.
I knew instantly what it was as the box itself was inside a pink postage box with ‘BIRCHBOX’ written down the side, so the excitement was instant. I ran into my nanna’s living room to open it straight away, that’s how excited I was, couldn’t even wait to walk next door…
The design of the box, which is different each month, was absolutely beautiful. This months box design is called;
“Be Present Not Perfect”.
With each box having a different wrap around pattern, the boxes are also a super cute keep sake. With each of my boxes, I’m going to clue them on top of each other and use them as little storage draws for my make up, as you can see from the first photo, they pull out rather than having a lift off lid which I just love. But my first box will be the top one as this pattern is far too pretty to cover.
1. The Ritual of Sakura Organic Rice Milk & Cherry Blossom Foaming Shower Gel.
RRP – £8.50
Sample Size – 3/5
Overall rating – 3/5
This was a full size product but I still thought it was quite a small bottle. I wouldn’t pay £8.50 for it but it did smell absolutely lovely and so soft on the skin.
I feel like it would be gone after two uses if you were to wash your whole body. What I didn’t like about it though was that the nozzle seems to just keep pushing product out after the first use to I can imagine it wasting quite a bit of product. None the less, it was lovely to use and nice to try something new but I think I will stick to my foam burst in the future.
2. BLAQ Hydrogel Eye Mask.
RRP – £22 for 5 sets
Sample Size – 2/5
Overall Rating – 2/5
Not long before I decided to join Birchbox, I had been binge watching Tammy Hembrow’s YouTube videos and in one of them, she used these and I decided I really wanted some. So you can imagine my excitement when, in my first box, this was one of the products I could choose from!!
I have the worst body clock ever and so my sleeping patterns are so messed up, especially Monday and Friday when I am up for work at 4:30 am and can never seem to get to sleep the night before, so, as you can imagine, I have horrendous eye bags.
This wasn’t what I was expecting at all. It was two black under eye masks that were quite thick, sitting in a liquid so they felt really slimy when I first took them out. You leave them on for 15 minutes and, although it took me a little while to get them in the right place where they didn’t feel weird when I blinked, they felt super relaxing whilst on.
You have to go onto the products website to find out how long to keep it on for which was a bit of a faff, but I imagine if you bought the full sized product, it would tell you on the box. It did say though that for it to work you have to do it twice a week. Obviously with one sample this isn’t possible and I wasn’t willing to spend £22 on something that I’m not even sure works.
I don’t think I would buy these again unless I was earning a lot more and could afford to, £44 is a bit much for a months worth and so I think I will keep a look out for a cheaper alternative. I’m glad I got to try it though as it did feel nice whilst it was on.
3. Pro Blo Group MaskME – Hydrating Hair Mask.
RRP – £8 for 4 sachets
Sample size – 4/5
Overall Rating – 5/5
I won’t lie, when I first saw this I didn’t think it would be something I’d ever use. Part of me expected that I would completely forget about it but then, when I decided to add this little feature to my blog, I knew I’d have to try it to be able to give an honest review. Boy am I glad I did!!!
With this product, you apply it to wet hair after shampooing from roots to tips, leave to settle for 10 minutes (or for a salon experience, wrap your hair in a hot damp towel) then rinse off with warm water, then rinse your hair again with cold water. It was super easy!! My only criticism was that, with my hair being quite thick, the sachet wasn’t quite enough for me to really cover my hair!
First, I thought it smelt absolutely amazing and my hair feel super soft and after just one use, I feel like my hair has had a surge of life put in it, it that even makes sense…
I will definitely be buying this product again, although I would much rather buy a bottle than sachets if that was possible, I’ll have to do a little looking around.
4. Spectrum Collections Marbleous Black B04 Brush
RRP – £5.99
Sample Size – 5/5
Overall Rating – 5/5
I have wanted some Spectrum make up brushes for so long but I’m far too poor to splash the cash. This is (I think) an eyeshadow brush… that’s what I’ve used it for anyway. It’s so soft and lovely to use, I definitely think I’ll be purchasing a collection of spectrum brushes now and get rid of all my old disgusting brushes (Maybe if I ask my beautiful sister Becky nicely, she will get me some for my birthday 😉 ).
5. Benefit BADgal BANG! Volumising Mascara.
RRP – £21.50
Sample Size – 3/5
Overall Rating – 4/5
I was SO excited when I saw this was going to be in the box!! This was the sneak peak item and boy was I pleased. I followed benefit on Instagram literally just to find out what this ‘out of this world’ product was but I never thought I would actually buy it because I certainly don’t earn enough to be spending £21.50 on mascara.
Now… I’m quite annoyed tbh because I honestly don’t think any other mascara will live up to this one, so I’m going to have to buy it… (unless Bex wants to add it to my birthday present list 😉 ). This mascara is bloody brilliant!!! It doesn’t clump what so ever so you can layer up, it feels super light and looks absolutely amazing.
I am soooo happy that this was in the box and I was super surprised also, definitely something I will be buying again!!!
I’m so pleased Sophie introduced me to Birchbox and I cannot wait for next month. I was half expecting to cancel after the first month but I definitely won’t be now. It’s worth the money, you actually get so much considering how much you pay for it and it’s such a brilliant way to try new beauty products, especially as someone who knows absolutely naff all about beauty products!!
Keep a look out for April…
