April Birchbox Review

Helllooooo (or goodbye) April!

It’s been quite a month…hectic in fact. Forgive me for being absolutely useless!

I was knee deep in dissertation when my Birchbox arrived, so a quick glance as to what goodies I’d received was all I managed before cracking back on with my work. I won’t lie….

D I S A P P O I N T E D .

I’ll go into a little detail why for you now but honestly, I was not impressed.

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR DAY

As I mentioned in my last (well, first) Birchbox review, each box has it’s own name, it’s own design and I’m pretty sure is a collaboration with a brand or artist etc. This months was with Cath Kidston.

Now, I’ve never been a big Cath Kidston fan… in fact I think it’s the most granny-fied pattern ever and not my style. So when it comes to stacking my boxes to make storage draws, this definitely won’t be going on the top. But anyhow, there must be some people who like it so I guess they’ll have pleased in one way or  another.

1. Beauty Protector Protect & Volume.

RRP – £21.50

Sample Size – 3/5

Overall Rating – 0/5

I’m not even going to lie and say I’ve tried this product….

The whole point of Birchbox is that you can create your ‘beauty profile’, describing your skin type/tone, hair type, all that jazz.

Birchbox, if you’re reading this, I would love to know why I went through the process of inputting all of my information (in which I described my hair as being some crazy frizzy mess that needs taming) for you to completely disregard it. I’d be surprised if they’d even looked at my account this month before putting my box together.

The last thing my hair needs is more volume. So no, I will not be trying this product because no matter how good it is, it’s not going to do my hair any favours. I don’t even want to imagine what my hair would be like after smothering it in volume spray. It could be the best product ever, but I’m not going to sit here giving the product, and Birchbox, a glowing review when I couldn’t use the product.

2. Birchbox Brush Cleaner

img_2181

RRP – £5

Sample Size – 5/5

Overall Rating – (product) 5/5 (in this box) 0/5

The second product is another prime example of how Birchbox just didn’t bother to tailor this box to me. You see, after rating the products I got in last months box, Birchbox sent me an email with a code for free delivery and two free products when I buy something from the Birchbox shop. Sophie, the friend who introduced me to Birchbox, has received this in the box she’d got most recently when we talked about it and I wanted one so badly!!! I’ve been planning on getting a make up brush cleaner for so long because I’ve always used the palm of my hand and it doesn’t half irritate. So this was the first thing I wanted to buy when I had some money.

Now, you’d think that when you buy something from the Birchbox shop, or receive it in your box, they would add it onto your account so you don’t receive it again. Fair enough if it was a make up or hair product that could have ran out, but this is a physical tool that clearly can’t run out.

Yeah, maybe it’s my fault for buying it, but why would they keep it for sale in the Birchbox shop if they’re going to keep putting it in monthly boxes when they can’t even give it in a sample size. It makes no sense.

Overall, I love this product, it’s great and so easy to use. But I don’t need two…

This one will be going to my sister so at least it’s not going to waste, but I didn’t exactly subscribe to Birchbox to give the contents of it away.

3. Cath Kidson Hand Cream

RRP – £2.50

Sample Size – 1/5

Overall Rating – 0/5

Given the price of the product, I’m assuming this is a full sized product, pretty tiny still if you ask me. I wasn’t too pleased when I saw this, but then I thought I may as well still give it a try. BIG MISTAKE.

It literally smelt like talc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a bit of talc… how else are you supposed to get leggings on after swimming?! But It’s definitely not a nice smell for some fancy pancy Cath Kidston hand cream!

I had this image of ‘Cath Kidston’ as being an over-priced, granny patterned company that sells whale sperm face cream that takes 30 years off you in one use. Instead, they sell slimy hand cream that smells like my nanna’s bathroom. Let’s not.

4. Beautaniq Beauty Fill + Tame Brow Gel – Brunette

img_2176

RRP – £8.50

Sample Size – 3/5

Overall Rating – 0/5

This product was this months sneak peak and boy was I excited. After one of my gorgeous blogger friends had mentioned brow gel on their blog, I really wanted to try it out. I’ve always been a powder brow gal, so the thought of trying something new that could change my face forever got me a lil’ bit giddy.

I’m not sure whether it was full sized or a sample (there is a key in the little booklet to say but the colours for full sized and Birchbox exclusive are waaaay too similar to tell which is for what!) but it’s pretty damn tiny.

I gave it a go, and apart from it being a little too dark for me (and my brows are already quite dark) it just looked greasy. I left it on to see how it survived through the day. After about 3/4 hours, I wiped my finger over my brow and my finger was almost black. I can only imagine what my face would look like if I got caught in the rain with this on…trust me it’s not attractive.

So this is a big fat no from me. I’ll be sticking with my powder brow from now on.

5. ModelCo Baked Blush – Moonshine

RRP – £24

Sample Size – 2/5

Overall Rating 1/5

Last but not least was the product I got to choose. I couldn’t really decide between this one and a lighter highlighter so I picked at random, I couldn’t remember which I’d chose when it came.

Have a look at the second picture… see that very faint line on my wrist…? That was after about 5 attempts to swatch this damn thing. 5 TIMES!!!! Shocking right?

For £24 pound I expect a heck of a lot more. I’ve got a highlight palate for £5 from Asda that has better pigment than this crap. (Now that Asda palate is something you NEED!) I’ve given it a go, I’ve put it to the bottom of my make up bag (I think) and I’ll likely never tough it again. Hey, maybe one of my little cousins will get it for Christmas! ha.

Overall

If you haven’t got the picture by now, I hate to tell you this but man you’re slow.

Again…

D I S A P P O I N T E D .

I’ll still be getting a box next month, but if it doesn’t get better I’ll be cancelling because I don’t fancy wasting money on a bunch of rubbish that isn’t even tailored to me. Hey, maybe I’ll give Glossybox a go… let me know in the comments if you’ve used either of them and which is better lol.

will I carry on getting Birchbox… stay tuned to find out
