Pick me up Playlist

I may be feeling very positive lately, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all have days (or even just a couple of hours) that we feel down and need a good cheering up.

Just before Christmas, (I know, I’m a little late but leave be okay!!) I was tagged in this little tag by one of my gorgeous blogger friends Britt. I did plan to do the post then but I had a little break from blogging and now I’m back and really feeling this positive vibe, so why not give it a go.

Rules:

  1. Link back to ‘Pick Me Up Playlist’ creator – Laura Spoonie
  2. Tag the blogger who nominated you – Britt – Alternatively Speaking
  3. Mention how music helps your Mental Health
  4. List 10 songs that you would consider to be a part of your ‘Pick Me Up Playlist’ (optional: mention a little bit why each song is on your list)
  5. Tag 10 other bloggers to join in with the ‘Pick Me Up Playlist’ Challenge (I think all the bloggers I know have been tagged so I won’t be able to tag this many….)

Keep this Challenge going throughout the day, build the Playlist and spread the Positivity

*If you’re nominated for this TAG don’t’ feel compelled to take part, it’s just to spread some joy and positivity*

HOW MUSIC HAS HELPED WITH MY MENTAL HEALTH

Now, I wouldn’t say my mental health is ever really something I suffer with. Don’t get me wrong, I have days where I don’t feel too great, lacking in confidence and positivity, but I’m not one to go around saying I’m “depressed” as soon as I feel a little rubbish. It’s something I’m greatly against.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand the severity of depression and anxiety and other’s but in my opinion, you can feel down / nervous / self conscious etc without actually having any.

When I am feeling low though, I love to go for a drive and sing my favourite songs at the top of my lungs – basically hold my own one man concert (people driving past love it, I’m tellin ya).

MY PICK ME UP PLAYLIST

There’s a little bit of a theme running through my songs of choice as you’ll see. Most of the songs that bring me joy are all because of memories with other people, not necessarily just because I like the song. This is probably something I’ve only realised when thinking about what songs make me happy and I think its kind of sweet.

#1 Perfect to me – Anne Marie

I’ve really been loving all of Anne Marie’s music, but this song in particular just makes me feel so good. Whenever you’re feeling hideous (we all get like that sometimes) it’s the perfect song to just make you really think like who cares what other people think of you or say, every single one of us is beautiful, with or without make up / wearing our best outfit or our lazy, chill clothes, it really doesn’t matter because we are all perfect in our very own way!

#2 Little Mix – Do I really have to choose one??

Is there a better band than Little Mix when it comes to girl power?? I think not!

I absolutely love Little Mix but most of all, Power, Woman Like Me & Shout out to my ex!!

They are proper dance songs, like thy really do make you feel all sassy like dance ready!

#3 Sorry Not Sorry – Demi Lovato

If you ever want to feel completely bad ass – this is the song you need. Honestly, if you’ve gone through a break up and you feeling rubbish about yourself or whatever, listen to this song and you’ll feel AMAZING!

That was probably the reason I started to listen to it more but now it just makes me feel so sassy I can’t help but play it every time I drive!

#4 Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler

Growing up, my sisters and I would sing this song together, taking it in turns of who got to be the lead and the other two would sing the “Turn around” bit and the other bit that the men in the song sing. This song always puts me in a good mood, it reminds of being young and my only worry being the fact I had to tell my mum I’d burst one of those flour squishy face things all over the back of the car… You know what I mean?

THESE BAD BOYS – We got in so much trouble!!!

#5 Somewhere over the Rainbow – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

This is my mums favourite song and I can 100% understand why. It’s such a beautiful song and I feel so warm when I hear it. Like, this song can literally transport you to a beach in Hawaii and for that brief moment, you’re in your own little world hearing the birds, feeling the sun on your skin and it just makes you genuinely happy!!

It’s a song that you can’t help but smile when you hear it.

#6 Annie’s Song – John Denver

For years, my Dad has sang this whilst he cleans the kitchen (strangely enough). So it always makes me feel so happy when I hear it as it reminds me of him singing away in a real operatic manor.

Most people will know it as You Fill Up My Senses – the only reason I know it’s called Annie’s song was because I bought it for him on LP one year and I spent hours looking for it but could only find Annie’s Song. After god knows how long of being incredibly confused why this other song was coming up, I went onto YouTube (god knows why I didn’t do this sooner) only to find its the same song.

Occasionally, when my mum and I are in the living room and dad is in the kitchen, we will start singing it and he will join in from the other room, it really does make us smile and that’s the same feeling I get whenever I hear it now!

#7 Yellow Submarine – The Beatles

This song is one of my Grandad’s favourite. Whenever we go to a family event, we always put this song on and myself, my Grandad, my mum and sisters, all my aunties and cousins and my Grandma all stand in a big circle and dance to this song, we even have our little dance routine too which obviously makes it all the more enjoyable.

My Grandad is most certainly one of my favourite people in the whole entire world and he absolutely loves this song which fills me with so much joy, so whenever I hear it I can’t help but see him and his big smile and bow tie and trilby hat in my head.

#8 Body Rock – Maria Vidal

Another little time hop. A lot of people won’t actually know this song (you’re missing out big time) but this was on my dads 80’s school reunion CD and used to play in the car whenever we drove to Cornwall or Wales. Eventually, it just became a bit of a thing and it was my favourite song for such a long time. IT was one of the first songs we played when I got my Dad an Amazon Echo for his birthday last year.

Whenever we hear it now, we all dance around the kitchen together and sing along at the top of our lungs.

#9 Kokomo – The Beach Boys

Around 4 years ago, I started watching Full House on Netflix and became absolutely H O O K E D !

This song was played on an episode where TBB made a guest appearance. Anyhow, It was stuck in my head for such a long time that I was singing it around the house and my parents were both shocked and confused as to how I actually knew it.

One day, I was in the kitchen preparing tea and this song came on, I started twisting up and down the kitchen having the time of my life when my dad walked in and joined in, then mum came in and joined in also. I filmed us all dancing around the kitchen singing along (I so wish I saved that video 😦 ) and it was honestly such a funny memory. Now whenever I hear the song, it not only reminds my of my all time favourite TV show, but that sweet moment too.

#10 Proud Mary – Tina Turner

There are many reasons this song made the list. Not only is it a real feel good song, it also reminds me of all my dancing girls. There are so many songs that remind me of Dance and the amazing memories of dance shows but this song stands out above the rest.

It also reminds me of dancing with all of my cousins at my cousins wedding last year and having the time of our lives. Having such a big family, its rare that we all get together so when we do its always so much fun!

Now whenever this song comes on, I can’t help but get up and dance (I was even dancing on the tables at the office Christmas Party – if that doesn’t tell you how much I love it, I don’t know what does).

So yeah, definitely a lot of fun memories for this song – ah you’ve gotta smile 🙂

Honestly, there are so many more songs I could have chosen but it would have been far too long of a list.

As I mentioned earlier Britt also tagged all of my blogger friends in this tag, so I won’t tag them again but if you’re a blogger reading this, feel free to join in, it actually is a really fun post to write, I was smiling all the way through!

Be sure to let me know in the comments what your go-to pick me up song is!!

Much Love
